The five new programs launched today by PROCOLOMBIA are: Mipyme Internacional (International MSMEs) , Mentor Exportador (Export Mentoring Program), Mas Multilatinas (More Multi-Latin Companies), Destino Global (Global Destination), and Marca Pais (Country’s Brand).

Maria Claudia Lacouture, President of PROCOLOMBIA, announced the official launch after introducing the new scope of the country's business promotion office, in the company of the Minister of Trade, Industry and Tourism, Cecilia Alvarez Correa, and the President of the Republic of Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos Calderon.

Increasing Colombia’s exporting capacity is one of our goals. According to data by Confecamaras, there are 1.3 million companies registered in Colombia and only 3,170 of them export their products. “The goal by 2018 is that 4,170 companies conduct exports on a regular basis”, stated Maria Claudia Lacouture, President of PROCOLOMBIA.

As a result, the Mipyme Internacional program was developed so that PROCOLOMBIA can help companies with exporting potential design their own foreign trade departments.

With this in mind, PROCOLOMBIA will hire experts in the field to work directly with these companies for a year. Ultimately, entrepreneurs will learn how to conduct a cost analysis, about the exporting procedure, and how to make their products suitable for international demand, among other key aspects to run their own exports.

“Companies must also commit to certain goals, like having an in-house manager in charge of the foreign trade department, that they are able to export at the end of that year, that they are considered a MSME, and that they have a product suitable to be exported”, added Lacouture, who also explained that the program will follow an RFP solicitation model expected to start by early 2015.

PROCOLOMBIA will also implement the Mentor Exportador Program to foster strategic partnerships with companies with experience in exports or with investors in order to improve product and company competitiveness before entering the international market.

Companies in this program will be medium-sized enterprises, and will be supported to achieve exports under their own brand. This Program has already started with Grupo EXITO, which has mentored and trained its vendors in order to begin exporting on their own towards those markets where PROCOLOMBIA has identified business opportunities.

On the other hand, the Mas Multilatinas program will focus on guiding globalization strategies so that more Colombian companies can open branches abroad without overlooking domestic production. “We intend to increase the number of Colombian companies abroad. To this end, we are working with 127 companies and have identified attainable globalization opportunities”, stated Lacouture.

In regards to foreign investment, PROCOLOMBIA will also promote the arrival of companies to bolster domestic industries and will foster supply through Colombian companies, including raw materials for production, uniforms, and services.

Another program is Destino Global, which focuses on attracting investments to support the tourism infrastructure across regions, as well as corporate and leisure tourism services. With this in mind, the program will work with local partners to create added-value proposals that leverage the regions’ available potential to hold congresses and conventions.

“We will increase the number of companies exporting their services both in the vacation and the meetings tourism sectors,” explained Lacouture.

PROCOLOMBIA’s new scope will include Marca Pais to further position Colombia’s image abroad.

“PROCOLOMBIA has a wider scope; the country is now on the international map, and the promotion efforts will go beyond the previous three business areas. Marca Pais , the Country’s Brand will lead the complete international communication strategy to leverage Colombia’s main asset: its character,” stated Lacouture.

Lacouture added that the promotion office evolved in response to the needs of the entrepreneurs in the country, that is, to focus and sustain Colombia’s growth.
